Tech themes shaping 2025: Experts weigh in on the future of AI, VR and AR

Author Arthur C. Clarke once said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is equivalent to magic.” The tech leaders of this world may not be magicians, but they are certainly pulling out all the tricks to create cutting-edge tech.

There’s no denying the world is rapidly adapting to a digital climate. From AI to virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), tech innovation is redefining how we work, play and communicate.

The recent SXSW Sydney 2024 event provided a sneak peek into the key trends driving this rapid transformation. Let’s dive into the biggest themes shaping the tech landscape in 2025 and beyond, from AI’s role in enhancing job efficiency to the next-gen advancements in VR and AR.

AI: Enhancing jobs, not replacing

With the AI gold rush seems to be reaching its peak hype, the role of AI in the workforce remains a hot topic. Renowned marketing leader Oksana Koriakova says AI is not here to replace humans, but rather enhance their abilities. While AI can process data and automate repetitive tasks with impressive speed, its creativity, emotional intelligence and human connection remain irreplaceable.

Koriakova notes, “Creativity and soul come from humans,” highlighting the growing importance of personalised, emotionally resonant storytelling in marketing.

While AI tools are fantastic for generating content quickly and identifying trends, it is still the human touch that remains a key focus in 2025. After the mega boom of AI’s launch at the consumer level, it only highlighted how vital it is for thought leaders and brands to adopt an authentic tone of voice. AI’s true power lies in working alongside professionals, freeing them up to focus on higher-level, creative tasks rather than tedious operations.

Blending AI and robotics across industries

The fusion of AI and robotics is another key trend that’s set to redefine industries. With AI integrated into robotics, industries will unlock new realms of work and creativity, from manufacturing to healthcare. According to Forbes, the transformative power of AI and robotics is already working its magic in the operating theatre.

“Robotics are used in surgery to assist doctors in delicate procedures, robotic exoskeletons are used in rehabilitation from injury or illness, and so on. Artificial intelligence is used to assess diagnoses and treatment plans, as well as accelerating medical research and drug development.

The booming startup ecosystem

Tech startups are exploding globally, with an estimated 50 million new startups launching each year and counting. Yet, according to Microsoft, only 10 per cent manage to sustain long-term success.

With the tech giants (Microsoft, Google, Meta and OpenAI) acquiring market share dominance, tech contributor Kjartan Rist wrote in Forbes, stating, “AI startups…have learned a harsh lesson: it’s hard to stand out when a trillion-dollar company is right behind you, ready to steamroll.”

Amid this competition, Australian tech startup Heffron.ai, founded by ambitious teen entrepreneur Nick Mihailou, is making waves – audio waves, that is. Heffron.ai is helping businesses streamline telecommunications with AI-driven solutions that simplify communication processes.

Nick’s story is the exception to the rule – exemplifying the innovation happening in the tech world. From developing apps at just 12-years-old to raising $700,000 in venture capital at 17, his journey underscores the importance of agility, creativity and risk-taking in the tech startup scene. With AI rapidly evolving, businesses that master this transformative technology are set to thrive, unlocking unprecedented growth opportunities.

Virtual reality (VR): A new way of living

Virtual reality is transforming the way we interact with the world, offering immersive experiences that change how we work, learn and play. At SXSW Sydney, VR’s potential was on full display. With the new Meta Quest headset and innovations in colour pass-through technology, VR is now seamlessly integrating digital objects into real-world environments. This exciting development is paving the way for a new generation of augmented reality (AR) experiences that will transform industries like education, healthcare and entertainment.

Jonathan Kovarch, a VR developer, emphasises that VR is still in its early stages, with indie developers leading the charge. “It’s still the Wild West,” he says, as innovators continue to push boundaries in the VR space. The ability to blend virtual and physical worlds will create new opportunities for education, therapy, and training, while also reimagining the way we game, shop and connect.

Looking further into the future, the Orion prototype AR glasses, though currently accompanied by a hefty price tag, are another exciting glimpse into the next generation of AR. With the ability to integrate smart assistants and real-time data, these glasses are set to transform how we navigate our environment and interact with the world, offering a more immersive, hands-free experience. As production scales up, the price of these devices will inevitably drop, making AR a reality for more consumers in the near future.

Authentic storytelling: The heart of technological growth

Finally, the importance of storytelling in tech was a key theme at SXSW Sydney. Andrew Watt, ANZ representative at SXSW Sydney explains technology itself is just a tool – its true value is realised when it’s paired with compelling narratives. Whether driven by humans or in tandem with AI, the stories we tell about technology shape its impact on the world.

For Australian innovators, this storytelling is even more significant. Many Australian founders begin their ventures with limited resources but have an unwavering determination to create something meaningful. Their fearless, outcome-driven approach has led to some of the most exciting innovations coming out of the region. As we look to 2025 and beyond, the power of storytelling will be integral to the success of tech companies, from VR experiences to smart devices and beyond.

Looking ahead through a virtual lens

The future of technology is already unfolding before our eyes. From AI’s evolving role in enhancing industries to the next generation of AR and VR experiences, innovation is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. The rise of immersive tech, driven by indie developers and tailgated by the tech giants, is just the beginning.

As these trends continue to evolve, the possibilities for how we live, work and interact with the world around us are limitless.

The question is: are you ready for the tech revolution?
